The Challenge
Saltwater fishing reels endure some of the harshest conditions in recreational equipment. A single day on the ocean leaves fine sea salt, sand particles, oxidized grease and bait residue packed into the bail arm, spool bearings, drag washers and the精密 gearset beneath the side plate. If not removed quickly, salt begins corroding steel components and turns lubricants into abrasive paste, destroying smoothness and eventually seizing the reel. Soaking in fresh water helped only superficially, while aggressive scrubbing with brushes risked pushing grit deeper into bearings and scratching anodized finishes. A professional reel-service shop needed a cleaning method powerful enough to flush fine abrasives from deep inside the mechanism without disassembling every component completely.
The Solution
The shop standardized on an ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner with a 28 kHz transducer, chosen for its strong cavitation suited to metal parts and mineral residues. Reels are partially disassembledu2014side plate, spool, rotor and bail removedu2014and the components sit in a mesh basket within a heated tank of mild aqueous degreaser at 60u00b0C for a 15-minute cycle. The imploding bubbles penetrate bearing races, gear teeth and drag-stack interfaces, carrying salt crystals and old grease into suspension where they are filtered out. A second shorter rinse cycle with clean water removes any detergent trace before parts are dried, re-lubricated and reassembled.
The Outcome
Reels returned from service show noticeably smoother drag and retrieve feel, with no grit remaining in bearings or gears. Corrosion-related comebacks have dropped sharply because salt is removed before it can attack steel, and the shop has shortened turnaround time per reel since manual brushing is largely replaced. Anglers report longer service intervals between overhauls, and the standardized ultrasonic process has become a selling point that distinguishes the shop's professional restoration service from quick rinses.
