Vinyl Turntable Tonearms, Headshells & Cartridge Hardware
Challenge
An audiophile service workshop restored vintage turntables and tonearm assemblies: aluminum/magnesium tonearm wands, SME-style headshells, cartridge bodies, counterweight shafts, pivot yokes and small stainless screws. Stylus dust, record-shed debris and decades of finger oil sat in pivot recesses and headshell finger-lift slots; contact surfaces carried light oxidation. Manual wiping risked disturbing fragile pivot bearings and anti-skate springs; heated baths were unsuitable for plated finishes, damping grease and adhesive-mounted damping pads.
Solution
The workshop installed an ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner with no heating: SUS304 small tank, 40 kHz for tonearm wands and cartridge bodies, 68 kHz for headshell slots, pivot yokes and micro-screws, adjustable power, degas mode for filtered mild aqueous solution and semi mode for plated wands and assembled pivots. Headshells and cartridge bodies were separated from delicate styli and placed in partitioned non-contact trays, with pivot yokes secured upright to avoid trapped air.
Outcome
Headshell slots, pivot yokes and counterweight shafts cleaned of dust and finger-oil residue. Plated tonearm finishes and assembled pivots were protected in semi mode, with no thermal distortion. No heater warm-up, no solvent odor, and shorter restoration turnaround; contact-surface cleanliness improved before final lubrication and alignment.
