Challenge

Metrology rooms require reference tools free of fingerprint oils, preservative oil, metal fines and airborne dust; even sub-micron films can affect repeatability at tight tolerances. Manual wiping with cloths left fibers and occasional micro-scratches, while heated baths added thermal expansion variables before measurement.

Solution

The lab standardized on an ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner with no heating: SUS304 tank, 40 kHz uniform cavitation, low-power semi mode for coated/optical styli, degas mode for filtered aqueous solution and adjustable cycle time. Gauge blocks sat in dedicated racks, micrometers were partially disassembled to expose anvils/spindle threads, and CMM probes were cleaned with non-contact cavitation only.

Outcome

Fingerprint oil, preservative film and fine particles were removed without abrasive contact. Measurement repeatability improved by removing undocumented surface contamination, with no thermal conditioning from heater cycles. Reusable reference tools maintained longer between recalibration.
