Delicate Cleaning of Vintage Camera Lenses

The Challenge
A specialist optical restoration workshop rebuilds vintage camera lenses from the 1950s through the 1980s. Decades of use leave aperture blades sticky with dried lubricant, focus helicoids packed with hardened grease, and lens barrel threads contaminated with dust, fungus spores and oxidized oils. Disassembly exposes dozens of precision parts, many with soft aluminum knurling or fragile lacquer finishes. Traditional cleaning with cotton swabs and solvent was painfully slow, risked leaving fibers behind, and occasionally etched delicate surfaces. The restorer needed a method capable of lifting old lubricants and debris from the tightest clearances without touching the part surface.
The Solution
The workshop adopted a compact ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner operating at 68 kHz for its fine, low-impact cavitation bubbles. Small batches of disassembled components are placed in a fine-mesh basket and immersed in a mild, non-polar cleaning solution maintained at 35u00b0C. The high frequency generates micro-bubbles that implode gently enough to protect soft aluminum and lacquered finishes, yet forcefully enough to flush old grease from aperture blade slots and helicoid threads. A short 6-minute cycle is followed by an isopropyl alcohol rinse and warm-air drying in a dust-free cabinet.
TheOutcome
Restoration time per lens dropped sharply because the restorer no longer had to pick individual parts clean. Every component emerges uniformly free of old lubricant and debris, even in locations a swab could never reach, while delicate finishes remain untouched. The consistent results have raised the workshop's confidence in taking on rare and high-value lenses, and customer feedback on the smooth, factory-fresh feel of restored focus and aperture actions has strengthened the studio's reputation for museum-quality work.
