Fiber-Optic Connector Ferrules & Laser Cavity Optics

Challenge

A photonics assembly cell cleaned SC/LC ceramic ferrules, MT ferrules, fiber adapter sleeves and laser cavity lenses. Ferrule bores retained cerium-oxide and alumina polishing slurry; connector faces held index-matching gel fingerprints; laser cavity lenses accumulated coating-deposition dust and tiny carbides. Hand wiping left fibers and micro-scratches; solvent swabs reached only the face, not the bore. Heated baths risked changing epoxy condition around ferrule tails and coated optics.

Solution

The cell deployed an ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner with no heater: SUS316L small bench tank, 68 kHz for ferrule micro-boats and lens surfaces, 40 kHz option for adapter sleeves with heavier handling dust, adjustable power, degas mode for fresh filtered aqueous optical detergent and semi mode for coated laser cavities. Ferrules were held in micro-rack fixtures with bores vertical; cavities sat face-up in non-contact trays.

Outcome

Ceramic ferrule bores and endfaces were de-slurried uniformly without fiber contact or face scratching. Index gel and fingerprint film lifted from connector seats; laser-cavity particulate dropped before final inspection. No heater warm-up and no epoxy/coating thermal risk, with repeatable degas recipes improving first-pass insertion-loss checks.
