Museum & Collectible Metal Small Objects: Badges, Silverware & Display Hardware

Challenge

A regional museum conservation unit prepared metal accessions — military badges, silver serving pieces, brass fittings, small bronze plaques and display hardware — for exhibition and storage. Items arrived with handling oils, indoor dust, archival-box residue, light tarnish and old adhesive traces. Mechanical polishing risked removing patina, engraving detail and original surface finish; heated baths were unsuitable for mixed alloys, organic adhesives and delicate gilded edges.

Solution

The unit standardized on an ACMESONIC Ultrasonic Cleaner with no heating: SUS304/optional SUS316L tank, 40 kHz for general silver/brass/bronze and 68 kHz for fine engraved and gilded items, low-power semi mode for fragile edges, degas mode for filtered aqueous conservation-grade solution and short adjustable timers. Each object was condition-assessed, photographed and placed in custom racks.

Outcome

Surface grime, dust and storage residue were removed from engraved and gilded areas without polishing scratches. Light tarnish layers reduced on accessible surfaces while original patina was better preserved than with manual buffing. No thermal stress for mixed-metal accessions; documentation photography showed consistent pre-treatment cleanliness.
